When it comes to External Wall Insulation (EWI) and render application, cold and damp conditions have always posed a challenge for installers. Slow curing times, poor adhesion and unreliable performance can all compromise project timelines—especially during the UK’s colder months.
Baumit StarContact Speed changes that.
Now available from Superior Render Supplies Limited, StarContact Speed is a fast-setting, mineral-based adhesive and basecoat designed specifically for cold and humid conditions. Whether you're working on a full EWI system or applying a basecoat to masonry, this product delivers dependable performance when temperatures drop.
What Is Baumit StarContact Speed?
Baumit StarContact Speed is a dual-purpose contact mortar formulated for:
- Bonding façade insulation boards, and
- Forming a robust reinforced basecoat layer using Baumit StarTex mesh
Its standout feature is its ability to be applied in low temperatures between +1°C and +10°C, making it ideal for extending your rendering season into autumn, winter and early spring.
Made from a blend of cement, organic binders, sands and performance additives, it offers a combination of high strength, excellent workability and moisture resistance—exactly what installers need when conditions are less than ideal.
Key Benefits at a Glance
✔ Fast Setting Formula – Accelerates workflow in cold weather
✔ High Adhesion & Flexibility – Ensures long-term durability in EWI systems
✔ Vapour Permeable – Helps maintain breathability of the building envelope
✔ Water-Resistant & Easy to Work With – Suitable for internal and external use
✔ Cold-Weather Application – Performs reliably down to +1°C
✔ Ideal for Both Adhesive & Basecoat Applications
Where Can StarContact Speed Be Used?
StarContact Speed is designed for use on:
1. Baumit External Wall Insulation Systems
- Suitable for areas above the DPC
- Not for use in plinth zones
- Compatible with all Baumit insulation boards except below-grade applications
2. Masonry Substrates
- Functions as a basecoat render
- Can be applied up to 10 mm in two passes (2 × 5 mm)
- Works effectively with the correct Baumit primers depending on substrate suction levels
Application Overview
Mixing
Simply add the contents of a 25 kg bag to 6.5–7.5 litres of clean water and mix to a creamy, lump-free consistency with a hand mixer or suitable spray machine. Allow to stand for five minutes before remixing.
Working Time
Approx. 45–60 minutes at <10°C, giving installers a generous window despite the rapid-setting nature of the product.
As an Adhesive
Apply in the standard perimeter-and-dabs method or with a notched trowel across the entire board surface. Achieves strong bonding contact even on substrates with deviations up to ±5 mm.
As a Basecoat
- First pass at 3 mm using a 10 mm notched trowel
- Embed Baumit StarTex mesh (100 mm overlaps)
- Apply second pass “wet on wet” to reach a total thickness of 3–5 mm
- For masonry: apply in two 5 mm layers for a total of 10 mm
Technical Performance
StarContact Speed offers a dependable blend of strength and safety performance:
- Reaction to Fire: A2 s1 d0
- Compression Strength: 3.5–7.5 N/mm²
- Adhesive Tensile Strength: ≥0.08 N/mm²
- Thermal Conductivity: ≤0.820 W/mK
- μ-Value: ≤25
Yield ranges from 4.2–7 m²/bag depending on layer thickness.
